This property, located in upper Northwest Washington, DC, was renovated to
accommodate a growing family. The owners desire was add a master bedroom
suite, renovate an outdated kitchen and provide an outdoor entertaining area and
connection to a landscaped rear yard area. Of major concern were the excessive
costs associated with a 2-story addition to achieve the owner's increased space
requirements. The design solution developed to increase the overall area of the
house resulted in converting an existing cramped attic into a space including a
full bathroom, closet and sleeping areas through the use of large scale roof
dormers. The design details of the addition replicate the Arts and Crafts style of
the original structure. Expansion of the kitchen into an existing exterior entry and
pantry area resulted in doubling the size of the original space. A screened porch
with a glass covered roof overlooks the rear yard and new terraced deck area.
