The owners of a family inherited farm property in Comus, Maryland established a
winery and planted the farmland surounding a historic barn with imported French
Bordeaux variety grafts. A contemporary wine processing facility adjacent to the
barn was constructed with the intention of some day restoring the barn into a tasting
room and entertainment facility.
A small tasting room and wine storage room was designed on the first level of the
historic barn structure using salvaged architectural elements such as large scale oak
beams and chestnut siding. A new structural steel framing system and concrete
floor for the barn was installed prior to installing the salvaged material as finish
materials for the interior wall surfaces and the wine bar. New insulated wood
windows replicate the original window units of the barn and alarge glass storefront
mimics the contemporary winery and opens to an outdoor seating area constructed
out of local field stone.
